Velocity Dispersion of the GD-1 Stellar Stream

چکیده
Abstract Tidally dissolved globular clusters form thin stellar streams that preserve a historical record of their past evolution. We report radial velocity dispersion 2.1 ± 0.3 km s −1 in the GD-1 stream using sample 43 spectroscopically confirmed members. The is constant over surveyed ≈15° span stream. also measured spur adjacent to main stream, and found similar value at tip spur. Surprisingly, region closer appears dynamically colder than An unperturbed model has ≈0.5 , indicating undergone dynamical heating. Stellar arising from clusters, which prior arrival Milky Way, orbited dwarf galaxy with cored density profile are expected have experienced amount heating required match observed GD-1. This suggests been accreted imprints its original host galaxy, including inner slope dark matter halo, remain observable today.

Stellar velocity dispersion in NLS 1 galaxies ⋆
Several authors recently explored the Black-Hole mass (MBH) vs. stellar velocity dispersion (σ∗) relationship for Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). Their results are more or less in agreement and seem to indicate that NLS1s fill the region below the fit obtained by Tremaine et al. (2002), showing a range of σ∗ similar to that of Seyfert 1 galaxies, and a lower MBH . Until now the [O iii] ...
متن کاملStellar Velocity Dispersion of the Leo a Dwarf Galaxy
We measure the first stellar velocity dispersion of the Leo A dwarf galaxy, σ = 9.3 ± 1.3 km s. We derive the velocity dispersion from the radial velocities of ten young B supergiants and two Hii regions in the central region of Leo A. We estimate a projected mass of 8 ± 2.7 × 10 M⊙ within a radius of 2, and a mass to light ratio of at least 20± 6 M⊙/L⊙. These results imply Leo A is at least ∼8...
متن کاملConstraining the Milky Way Potential with a 6 - D Phase - Space Map of the Gd - 1 Stellar Stream
The narrow GD-1 stream of stars, spanning 60 deg on the sky at a distance of ∼ 10 kpc from the Sun and ∼ 15 kpc from the Galactic center, is presumed to be debris from a tidally disrupted star cluster that traces out a test-particle orbit in the Milky Way halo. We combine SDSS photometry, USNO-B astrometry, and SDSS and Calar Alto spectroscopy to construct a complete, empirical 6-dimensional ph...
متن کاملMinimum Velocity Dispersion in Stable Stellar Disks . ̧ Numerical Simulations
We used N-body dynamical simulations to analyze the conditions for the gravitational stability of a three-dimensional stellar disk in the grav-itational field of two rigid spherical components — a bulge and a halo, whose central concentrations and relative masses vary over wide ranges. The number of point masses N in the simulations varied from 40 to 500 thousands and the evolution of the simul...
متن کاملAn Improved [o Iii] Line Width to Stellar Velocity Dispersion Calibration: Curvature, Scatter, and Lack of Evolution in the Black-hole Mass versus Stellar Velocity Dispersion Relationship
An improved transformation of the full width at half maxima (FWHM) of the [O III] λ5007 line in AGNs to the stellar velocity dispersion, σ∗, of the host galaxy is given. This significantly reduces the systematic errors in using FWHM([O III]) as a proxy for σ∗. AGN black hole masses, M•, estimated using the Dibai single epoch spectrum method, are combined with the new estimates of σ∗ to give a r...
